Iran has confirmed the death of Alireza Tangsiri, a
senior commander of its naval forces, following injuries sustained during a
recent airstrike.
According to a statement released by Sepah News, the
media outlet of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, Tangsiri died from
severe wounds days after the attack.
Iran’s Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, who assumed
leadership after the reported killing of his predecessor Ali Khamenei earlier
in the conflict, expressed condolences, describing Tangsiri as a loyal defender
of the nation and its values.
Tangsiri’s funeral is scheduled to take place in
Bandar Abbas, a key port city in southern Iran.
The development follows an announcement by Israel’s
Defence Minister, Israel Katz, who claimed that an Israeli airstrike had
targeted and killed Tangsiri, accusing him of involvement in operations
affecting the Strait of Hormuz.
Since the escalation of hostilities, Iran has
reportedly restricted maritime movement through the strategic waterway,
contributing to rising global energy prices.
Iranian officials stated that Tangsiri was
coordinating coastal defence operations at the time of the strike and vowed
continued resistance.
He becomes one of several high-profile Iranian figures
confirmed dead since the conflict began, including senior officials and
security leaders.
A veteran of the Iran-Iraq war, Tangsiri had led the
naval wing of the Revolutionary Guards since 2018, overseeing its expansion and
operations, including activities involving foreign vessels.
Despite these losses, analysts suggest that Iran
continues to demonstrate resilience, even as tensions with Israel and the
United States remain high.
