Iran has issued a strong warning to U.S. President
Donald Trump following remarks in which he suggested that the country’s newly
appointed Supreme Leader may not “live in peace.”
Trump made the comments during an interview with Fox
News, where he criticized Iran for keeping the strategic Strait of Hormuz
closed and warned the country to prepare for “death, fire, and fury.” He also
expressed dissatisfaction with the appointment of Mojtaba Khamenei as Iran’s
new Supreme Leader.
The U.S. president further stated that the Iranian
leader would find it difficult to live peacefully and claimed he would have the
final say regarding Iran’s leadership.
Reacting to the remarks, Iran’s security chief, Ali
Larijani, dismissed Trump’s statements as empty threats and issued a warning of
his own.
“Iran is not afraid of your empty threats,” Larijani
said, adding, “Even those greater than you could not eliminate the Iranian
nation. Take care of yourself not to be eliminated.”
The exchange comes amid heightened tensions between
both countries and follows the recent conviction of a man accused of plotting
to assassinate Trump during the 2024 U.S. presidential campaign.
The suspect, Asif Merchant, a Pakistani national
allegedly trained by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), was found
guilty of involvement in the assassination plot on Saturday.
U.S. national security officials had earlier warned
Trump’s campaign that Iran was targeting him and had allegedly deployed
multiple assassination teams inside the United States.
