Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei was reportedly
killed on Saturday, February 28, in a joint US-Israeli military operation,
according to Israel’s ambassador to Washington.
The strike was part of a coordinated “pre-emptive”
attack by US and Israeli forces, aimed at countering Tehran’s nuclear
ambitions. The operation prompted retaliatory missile launches from Iran
targeting Israel and other countries across the Middle East.
According to CNN, an Israeli official confirmed to
Axios that Khamenei’s body was recovered from his destroyed compound, based on
Israeli intelligence reports. Some of the first airstrikes reportedly targeted
areas around the offices of the 86-year-old Supreme Leader.
It was not immediately clear whether Khamenei was
present in his offices when the strikes occurred, and his death was confirmed
only several hours after the attack.
Khamenei had ruled Iran since 1989 and maintained
ultimate authority, continuing to shape the Islamic Republic decades after the
1979 revolution.
