US President Donald Trump announced that Iranian
Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei was killed following a predawn joint US-Israeli
military operation targeting Iran.
In a message on Truth Social, Trump described Khamenei
as “one of the most evil people in history” and called his death “justice for
the people of Iran.” He added that the bombing campaign would continue “as long
as necessary” to “achieve peace in the Middle East.”
“Khamenei, one of the most evil people in History, is
dead,” Trump wrote. “This is not only Justice for the people of Iran, but for
all Great Americans, and those people from many Countries throughout the World,
that have been killed or mutilated by Khamenei and his gang of bloodthirsty
THUGS.”
Earlier, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had
indicated there were “many signs” pointing to Khamenei’s death. The Israeli
military confirmed that around 200 warplanes participated in the strikes.
The attacks reportedly caused significant civilian
casualties. At least 108 people were killed in a strike on a girls’ primary
school in southern Iran, most of whom were children, according to the local
governor. The Iranian Red Crescent cited by Iranian media put the death toll
from the US-Israeli strikes at 201.
Iranian forces retaliated by targeting US and Israeli
military bases across the Middle East following the strikes on Tehran and other
cities.
Khamenei, 86, had led the Islamic Republic since 1989,
serving as the country’s highest political and religious authority and central
figure in its military and nuclear strategy.
