Oblique Seville of Jamaica stormed to victory in the men’s 100 metres final at the 2025 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo on Sunday, clocking a personal best of 9.77 seconds to secure his first global title.

Seville’s compatriot, Kishane Thompson, finished second in 9.82 seconds to complete a Jamaican 1–2 sweep, while defending champion Noah Lyles of the United States claimed bronze with a season-best 9.89 seconds. The result ended a decade-long American dominance of the event, dating back to Usain Bolt’s last World Championships triumph in 2015.

Nigeria’s Kanyinsola Ajayi delivered a landmark performance, placing sixth in 10.01 seconds. The 21-year-old became the first Nigerian man in 18 years to reach a World Championships 100m final, ending a drought since Olusoji Fasuba’s appearance in 2007. Ajayi had impressed throughout the rounds, consistently breaking the 10-second barrier, signaling a major breakthrough in his career.

The final was not without drama, as Botswana’s Letsile Tebogo, a strong medal contender, was disqualified for a false start. Seville, 23, who had struggled in the heats, recovered superbly to dominate both the semi-finals and final, reacting quickest at the start and powering through to a historic win.
