The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Cross River
branch, has petitioned the state Commissioner of Police, Rashid Afegbua,
demanding protection for Mrs. Victoria Mba, mother of a 22-year-old allegedly
killed by a security aide attached to Governor Bassey Otu.
NBA chairman, Enome Amatey, said Mrs. Mba and her
family have faced intimidation and harassment in their pursuit of justice. The
association also called for a transparent investigation into the death,
condemning attempts to label the deceased, Moses Mba, as mentally ill without
medical evidence.
According to the petition, the incident—described as
an extrajudicial killing—erodes public trust in the police and raises questions
of accountability and human rights.
The 22-year-old was reportedly beaten and shot on
August 1 after visiting the governor’s residence, claiming he had a message
from God for him. He later died on August 9 at the Naval Reference Hospital,
Calabar.
The NBA insisted that the investigation must be
professional, independent, and made public to restore confidence in the justice
system.
