Former Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp has agreed in
principle to become the new head coach of the Germany national team following
the departure of Julian Nagelsmann after the country's disappointing 2026 FIFA
World Cup campaign.
The German Football Association (DFB) confirmed on
Friday that it has begun discussions with Klopp after Nagelsmann stepped down
in the aftermath of Germany's shock Round of 32 elimination to Paraguay.
In a statement, the DFB revealed that Klopp has
expressed his willingness to take charge of the national team.
"Regarding the appointment of a new
coach, the DFB leadership will now seek talks with Jürgen Klopp. He has already
signaled his general willingness to take on the position,"
the federation said.
Klopp left his role as Liverpool manager in the summer
of 2024 after nearly nine years at Anfield, choosing to step away from coaching
following one of the most successful spells in the club's history.
During his time with the Reds, the 59-year-old guided
Liverpool to UEFA Champions League and Premier League titles, while also
winning several domestic and international trophies.
Klopp is currently serving as Red Bull's Head of
Global Football. However, reports from Sky Germany indicate that his contract
includes a verbal agreement allowing him to leave the role should the
opportunity to manage the German national team arise.
If the move is finalised, Klopp will be tasked with
rebuilding Germany following their disappointing World Cup campaign and
restoring the four-time world champions to the top of international football.
