A High Court in Kano State has remanded three staff
members of a rehabilitation centre in Kiru over their alleged involvement in
the death of a patient admitted for suspected drug abuse treatment.
The defendants — Yasir Yusuf, Nura Abdullahi, and
Bashir Sa’ad — were arraigned before Court No. 27, Metropolitan, on charges
bordering on conspiracy and culpable homicide.
The prosecution counsel, Saima Garba, told the court
that the accused persons allegedly conspired and used excessive force on the
victim after he was brought to the rehabilitation centre by his parents over
suspected illicit drug use.
According to the prosecution, the victim reportedly
slipped into a coma after being beaten by the defendants and was later rushed
to a government hospital, where he was confirmed dead.
The charges were filed under Sections 97 and 221 of
the Penal Code.
However, the three defendants pleaded not guilty to
the allegations.
Following their plea, the prosecution requested an
adjournment to allow the state seek legal advice on the matter.
Presiding judge, Hauwa Abba Musa, granted the
application and ordered that the defendants be remanded in a correctional
facility pending further legal advice from the government.
