An 85-year-old man, Malam Isah Abdullahi, has been
sentenced to 14 years in prison by a High Court sitting in the Gwarzo Division
of Kano State after being found guilty of rape.
The conviction was secured by the Kano State Ministry
of Justice, which successfully prosecuted the case before High Court No. 24.
According to official information, the offence
occurred on November 30, 2024, in Sauna, a community within Gabasawa Local
Government Area.
A statement issued by the ministry’s spokesperson,
Najib Lawn Dambazau, confirmed that the prosecution presented compelling
evidence that proved the case beyond reasonable doubt.
Delivering judgment, Justice Aisha Mahmud found the
defendant guilty and handed down a 14-year custodial sentence. The court,
however, took into account a plea for leniency from the defence before
finalising the sentence.
The case was handled by the Solicitor-General and
Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Salisu Muhammad Tahir, alongside his legal
team.
Reacting to the outcome, the Attorney-General and
Commissioner for Justice, Abdulkarim Kabiru Maude (SAN), praised the
prosecution team, noting that the judgment reflects the ministry’s dedication
to upholding justice.
The ministry also reaffirmed its commitment to
protecting victims and ensuring that perpetrators of sexual offences and other
violent crimes are brought to justice.
