Governor Nasir Idris of Kebbi State has
confirmed the release of the 24 schoolgirls abducted from Comprehensive
Secondary School, Maga, in the Danko-Wasagu Local Government Area.
Speaking on Tuesday, the governor emphasized that no
ransom was paid by either the state or federal authorities to secure their
freedom.
“No ransom was paid. The Kebbi State
Government did not pay a kobo, and neither did the Federal Government. The
rescue was achieved solely through the efforts of the security agencies,”
Governor Idris stated.
He revealed that the rescued schoolgirls will be formally
handed over to their parents on Wednesday.
Security Agencies Credited for Rescue
Governor Idris expressed gratitude to President Bola
Ahmed Tinubu for his prompt intervention and instructions to security
agencies, which he said contributed significantly to the rescue operation.
The release was earlier announced in a statement by Bayo
Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, who
noted that President Tinubu applauded the security agencies for their efforts.
Tinubu, in his statement, urged security operatives to
intensify operations to rescue other victims who may still be in captivity.
“I am relieved that all the 24 girls have
been accounted for. Now, we must, as a matter of urgency, put more boots on the
ground in vulnerable areas to avert further incidents of kidnapping. My
government will offer all the assistance needed to achieve this,”
the President said.
The successful rescue comes amid growing concerns over rising insecurity, especially the spate of school abductions in northern Nigeria.
