Kebbi State Governor, Nasir Idris,
has called on President Bola Tinubu to review Nigeria’s security
architecture following the abduction of schoolgirls in Maga, Danko/Wasagu Local
Government Area.
Governor Idris made the appeal on Monday while
receiving the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas,
at the Government House in Birnin Kebbi. The visit was part of a condolence
tour following the attack that left Vice Principal Malam Hassan Makuku dead
and 25 schoolgirls abducted.
Condolences and Donations
Speaker Abbas condemned the attack in its entirety and
proposed renaming the Government Girls Comprehensive Secondary School, Maga,
after the late Vice Principal. He also announced donations of ?20 million
to Makuku’s family and ?10 million to the family of the school watchman
who was killed.
Governor Idris confirmed he would honour the Speaker’s
request. He further expressed frustration over the security lapses that allowed
the attack, noting that he is awaiting explanations from the military regarding
why troops were withdrawn in the early hours before the incident.
Security Concerns
The governor explained:
“When we received intelligence on a possible attack,
we summoned a security meeting. Security agencies assured us all was well and
personnel would be mobilised to the school. The military was deployed, but they
later withdrew by 3 a.m., and by 3:45 a.m., the incident happened. Who
authorised the military to withdraw? How did security personnel pull out at
such a critical time?”
He stressed the need for urgent action to prevent
similar attacks, saying enemies are trying to undermine the nation’s democracy.
Governor Idris’ call comes amid rising concerns over
the security situation in northern Nigeria, particularly attacks on schools and
communities in Kebbi, Niger, and other states.
