The Lagos State governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has announced plans to demolish the 25-storey Great Nigeria Insurance (GNI) building on Martins Street, Lagos Island, once the fire consuming the structure is fully extinguished.

Governor Sanwo-Olu made the announcement during a visit to the scene on Thursday, revealing that a committee led by the Commissioner for Special Duties and Intergovernmental Relations, Gbenga Oyerinde, will oversee the demolition process in the coming days.

He confirmed that there were no fatalities, though several individuals sustained injuries and have been admitted to hospital.

The governor also urged residents to exercise caution during the dry season, emphasizing that this is not the first major fire incident on Lagos Island. He assured that first responders would remain on site to prevent a recurrence, while affected traders would receive government support.

The fire, which began late Wednesday at the Great Nigeria Insurance House, impacted about five nearby buildings and forced the closure of shops along Martins Street. Major adjoining streets were cordoned off, and business activities around the area were temporarily halted to prevent further escalation.

Agencies on the ground include the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, Nigeria Police Force, Federal Road Safety Corps, Federal Fire Service, and Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, all working to control the blaze.
