The Lagos State Government has announced an 18-week maintenance program for Mazamaza Bridge along the Lagos–Badagry Expressway, ahead of plans to eventually demolish and rebuild the structure as part of Blue Line Rail Phase 2, a 14-kilometre extension from Mile 2 to Okokomaiko.

The repairs, set to begin Monday, 19 January 2026, will target both the Toll and Service Lanes in both directions, focusing on expansion joints and other key bridge components, according to a statement from the Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi.

“The Lagos State Government has released a traffic diversion plan for the maintenance works on Mazamaza Bridge, both Service Lane and Toll Lane along the Lagos–Badagry Carriageway, inbound and outbound, from 19 January to 28 May 2026,” the statement said.

Phased Maintenance Plan

The maintenance will be conducted in multiple phases to minimize traffic disruption:

  • Preliminary Phase (Jan 24–30): Preparation of work zones and traffic assessment.
  • Phases 1–4 (Jan 31–Mar 30): Repairs on inbound Badagry lanes.
  • Phases 5–8 (Mar 31–Jun 2): Repairs on inbound Lagos lanes.

The bridge will remain partially open throughout the maintenance, with traffic strategically diverted across the Toll Lane, BRT Lane, and Service Lane.

Traffic Arrangements

  • Badagry-bound traffic: During Toll Lane repairs, vehicles will use the BRT Corridor; when the BRT Corridor is under maintenance, traffic will switch to the Toll Lane. Service Lane repairs will reduce traffic to one lane.
  • Lagos-bound traffic: Similar diversions will be implemented, alternating between the Toll and BRT lanes, with temporary one-lane restrictions during Service Lane work.

Motorists are advised to follow traffic signs and instructions from the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) throughout the maintenance period.

Future Bridge Plans

Structural tests conducted by the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) revealed that the current Mazamaza Bridge is not strong enough to support railway operations, prompting plans for a new bridge with 66 piers as foundational supports.

The new structure will be built to international standards, with a projected lifespan of 75 years or more, ensuring long-term safety and durability for the Blue Line Rail expansion.
