Manchester City secured a hard-fought 2?1 victory over
Newcastle United at the Etihad Stadium on February 21, 2026, moving within two
points of league leaders Arsenal.
City took the lead in the 14th minute when O’Reilly
converted a powerful finish past Nick Pope after a flick-on from Erling Haaland
set up Omar Marmoush and the English striker. Newcastle responded in the 22nd
minute through Lewis Hall, whose deflected strike beat Gianluigi Donnarumma.
Five minutes later, City regained the lead when
Haaland delivered a perfect cross for O’Reilly, who headed home from close
range. Despite pressure from Newcastle, City held on to secure the win.
The result keeps City on course for the Premier League
title, with a game in hand over Arsenal and a crucial head-to-head meeting
scheduled in April. Manager Pep Guardiola stressed the need for his team to
maintain possession and finish chances more efficiently as the season enters
its decisive phase.
This victory extended City’s unbeaten run to eight
games in all competitions, with five successive wins in recent matches, while
Newcastle, fatigued after a long midweek trip to Baku for Champions League
play-offs, remain winless at the Etihad in 20 Premier League visits.
