Manchester City have reportedly been found guilty of 114 charges brought against the club by the Premier League, although no punishment has been announced and the club is expected to appeal the decision.

The case follows an independent hearing that began more than two years ago and has attracted significant attention across English football. The outcome could have major implications for City’s recent history and their record of success in the Premier League.

The charges were brought in 2023 following a Premier League investigation into alleged financial breaches between 2009 and 2018.

City were accused of failing to provide accurate financial information, including details relating to revenue, player and manager payments, as well as alleged breaches of the league’s financial sustainability regulations. The club has consistently denied the allegations.

Since Sheikh Mansour’s Abu Dhabi United Group took over the club in 2008, Manchester City have established themselves among England’s most successful teams. During that period, they have won eight Premier League titles, four FA Cups, seven League Cups and one UEFA Champions League trophy.

The allegations gained further attention following the publication of leaked documents by German outlet Der Spiegel in 2018. Some of the documents appeared to suggest that sponsorship revenues from companies including Etihad and Etisalat may have included funds originating from Abu Dhabi United Group.

Other leaked documents were also reported to indicate that former City manager Roberto Mancini received payments through consultancy arrangements involving an Abu Dhabi-based club.

If the reported findings are upheld after any appeal, Manchester City could face significant sporting and financial sanctions. Possible consequences discussed in connection with the case include a substantial points deduction and, in an extreme scenario, expulsion from the Premier League.

Previous financial-rule cases have resulted in points deductions for clubs including Everton and Nottingham Forest, although the circumstances and charges in those cases were different.

The case could also have wider implications for Manchester City, including questions surrounding the club’s previous achievements and potential claims from other clubs if it is established that financial breaches provided a sporting advantage.

City’s squad could also come under scrutiny, with the future of key players such as striker Erling Haaland potentially affected depending on the eventual outcome of the case and any sanctions imposed.
