Manchester United have dismissed manager Ruben Amorim
just 14 months after his appointment, the club confirmed on Monday.
In a statement, the Premier League side said the
Portuguese coach had left his position, noting that the club’s leadership had
“reluctantly decided that it is the right time to make a change.”
United added that the decision was taken to give the
team “the best opportunity of achieving the highest possible Premier League
finish,” while thanking Amorim for his service and wishing him well in the
future.
Current Under-18s coach Darren Fletcher has been named
interim manager and will take charge of the team for Wednesday’s league clash
against Burnley.
United are presently sixth in the Premier League
standings following a 1-1 draw away to Leeds on Sunday.
Amorim’s exit comes shortly after a tense post-match
press conference in which the 40-year-old insisted he was Manchester United’s
“manager, not just a coach,” and publicly urged the club’s scouting department
and director of football, Jason Wilcox, to “do their job.”
The former Sporting Lisbon boss had earlier hinted at
internal frustrations, refusing to clarify comments he made regarding the
club’s transfer strategy. While appearing subdued ahead of the Leeds game,
Amorim spoke more openly afterward when asked about his relationship with the
club’s hierarchy.
“I came here to be the manager of Manchester United,
not the coach,” Amorim said at the time. “I’m not Tuchel, Conte or Mourinho,
but I am the manager of Manchester United. I’m not going to quit. I’ll do my
job until the board decides otherwise.”
Amorim was appointed in November 2024 and guided
United to the Europa League final in Bilbao in May, where they lost to
Tottenham Hotspur. However, domestic struggles continued, with the club
finishing 15th in the Premier League last season.
His 14-month spell is the shortest tenure of a
permanent Manchester United manager since David Moyes was dismissed after just
eight months in 2014.
The 20-time English champions have not lifted the
Premier League title since 2013, the final season under legendary manager Sir
Alex Ferguson.
