Fresh injury concerns have emerged for football legend
Lionel Messi just weeks before the FIFA World Cup, after Inter Miami CF
confirmed that the Argentine captain is dealing with muscle fatigue in his left
hamstring.
The 38-year-old forward was forced off during Inter
Miami’s thrilling 6-4 victory over Philadelphia Union on Sunday after appearing
to feel discomfort in the back of his left leg. Although Messi walked off the
pitch without visible difficulty, the club later revealed that medical
examinations showed signs of muscle overload linked to fatigue.
In an official statement released on Monday, Inter
Miami explained that Messi’s recovery timeline remains uncertain and will
depend on how he responds to treatment and rehabilitation in the coming days.
The development has sparked anxiety in Argentina ahead
of the upcoming FIFA World Cup, which will be jointly hosted by the United
States, Canada, and Mexico beginning on June 11. Argentina is scheduled to open
its campaign against Algeria on June 16 in Kansas City.
Since joining Inter Miami in 2023, Messi’s playing
time has been carefully managed to avoid burnout, especially during busy
fixture schedules. With Major League Soccer currently on break for the World
Cup period, attention is now focused on whether the eight-time Ballon d’Or
winner will regain full fitness in time for the tournament.
Although Messi has not officially confirmed his
participation, he is widely expected to lead Argentina in what could become his
sixth World Cup appearance — a feat that would equal the all-time tournament
record. Argentina’s squad announcement is expected next week, while warm-up
matches against Honduras and Iceland are scheduled for June 6 and June 9
respectively.
