Mohamed Salah will miss two matches at the Africa Cup of
Nations after suffering a back injury against Ghana, according to a statement
from the Egyptian FA.
The Liverpool striker suffered a back strain in Egypt’s
2-2 draw with Ghana on Thursday, and while his country will be disappointed
with the outcome, there had been concerns he would be out for longer.
Salah failed to complete the first half as he left the pitch
in the Group B match, and a long-term injury could have had implications for
Liverpool’s title bid and his country’s tilt at winning this year's AFCON
trophy.
A statement from the country’s FA confirmed that the injury
should not keep him out of action for the quarter-finals, assuming Egypt reach
that far.
"Mohamed Salah has suffered a strain in his back muscle
and will miss two matches at the Africa Cup of Nations," a statement said.
"The x-rays that Egyptian national team captain Salah
underwent showed that he suffered a strain in the posterior muscle, and he will
miss the team's next two matches at the AFCON -- against Cape Verde, and then
the Round of 16 match in the event of qualification."
