MTN Nigeria has announced the successful restoration of network services across 101 sites in 15 Local Government Areas (LGAs) in Adamawa, Borno, and Kano States, following a scheduled maintenance operation completed on Sunday, August 24.

The telecom giant said the exercise was necessary to address persistent infrastructure challenges that had disrupted connectivity in the region. The operation involved rerouting traffic through a newly installed fibre span along the AFCOT–Bawo Village route in Adamawa State, replacing a previously damaged section of the network.

Confirming the development, MTN stated in a press release:

“We can confirm that all impacted sites have been fully restored, and services are now operating normally. We appreciate our subscribers’ patience and sincerely apologise for any inconvenience caused during the downtime.”

Services Affected and Areas Impacted

The temporary downtime affected 2G, 3G, 4G, and enterprise connectivity, with disruptions felt in LGAs such as Girei, Song, Mubi North, Hong, and Michika (Adamawa); Askira/Uba and Shani (Borno); and Nasarawa (Kano). MTN confirmed that full restoration was achieved before 1 PM on August 24, within the planned timeframe.

Addressing Infrastructure Challenges in the Northeast

The telecom provider highlighted that Nigeria’s Northeast remains a challenging environment for network operators due to security threats, fibre cuts, and vandalism linked to years of insurgency. The scheduled maintenance was carried out during daylight hours to ensure the safety of field engineers working on the vulnerable and unprotected route.

MTN said the operation reflects its broader strategy to strengthen infrastructure, reduce service interruptions, and expand digital inclusion in underserved areas.

Commitment to Customers and Communities

The company noted that both individual and enterprise customers were affected, particularly in areas like Mubi North, Michika, and Nasarawa where businesses depend heavily on enterprise connectivity. The swift restoration, MTN said, underscores its customer-first approach, operational efficiency, and technical expertise.

“Reliable connectivity is critical for economic and social development in regions like Adamawa, Borno, and Kano. By proactively maintaining and upgrading our infrastructure, we aim to keep communities connected despite the challenges,” the company stated.

Looking Ahead

MTN reaffirmed its commitment to investing in infrastructure resilience and finding long-term solutions to fibre vandalism and other risks. The company added that sustaining service reliability in conflict-prone regions remains a top priority, as communication services are often a lifeline for residents and businesses.
