The Ondo State Command of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) has foiled an attempt to smuggle illicit drugs into the Medium Security Custodial Centre, Olokuta, Akure.

The interception occurred during a routine security screening at the facility’s gate lodge, where correctional officers apprehended two visitors and discovered about four grams of suspected Indian hemp concealed inside fresh tomatoes brought into the centre.

According to a statement issued by the NCoS on Wednesday, January 14, 2025, the substance was carefully wrapped in watertight nylon and allegedly meant for delivery to an inmate currently in custody.

The suspects were immediately arrested in line with the directive of the Controller-General of Corrections, Sylvester Ndidi Nwakuche, who has repeatedly stressed the importance of maintaining watertight security across all custodial facilities nationwide.

The service disclosed that the suspects have since been handed over to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for further investigation and possible prosecution.

Commending the officers involved, the Controller of Corrections in Ondo State, Charles Oyewole, praised their vigilance, professionalism, and swift response, describing the interception as a clear reflection of the service’s renewed commitment to security.

He reaffirmed the Nigerian Correctional Service’s resolve to maintain secure and humane custodial centres while ensuring the complete eradication of illicit drug trafficking within the correctional system.

The command also warned members of the public—particularly visitors to custodial facilities—that the NCoS will not tolerate any actions capable of compromising the safety and security of its centres, whether from within or outside the custodial walls.
