Manchester United handed Michael Carrick a dream start to his interim reign on Saturday with a commanding 2–0 victory over Manchester City at Old Trafford, dealing a major blow to their rivals’ Premier League title ambitions.

The Red Devils dominated large spells of the Manchester derby and were unfortunate not to score earlier, having three goals ruled out for offside and repeatedly denied by City goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma. United finally made their superiority count in the final 25 minutes through goals from Bryan Mbeumo and Patrick Dorgu.

Mbeumo, returning from the Africa Cup of Nations, opened the scoring with a composed low finish before Dorgu sealed the win to give United just their second victory in eight league matches.

The result lifts Carrick’s side into the top four and will be celebrated beyond Manchester, particularly in north London, as Arsenal move closer to a first league title in 22 years. Mikel Arteta’s men could extend their lead at the summit to nine points with a win at Nottingham Forest later on Saturday.

Carrick’s bold selection decisions paid off, with in-form Benjamin Šeško and Matheus Cunha starting on the bench to accommodate the returning Mbeumo and Amad Diallo. Harry Maguire also made his first start in two months and almost opened the scoring inside two minutes, heading Bruno Fernandes’ corner against the crossbar from close range.

City, struggling with injuries at the back, fielded an inexperienced central defensive pairing of Max Alleyne and Abdukodir Khusanov. The makeshift back line endured a torrid afternoon and would have conceded earlier but for Donnarumma’s heroics.

The Italian goalkeeper produced a string of fine saves, first denying Dorgu midway through the opening half and later pulling off a stunning double stop from Diallo and Casemiro. He was beaten twice before the break, but both Diallo and Fernandes were ruled offside after rounding the keeper.

Pep Guardiola attempted to shift momentum at half-time by introducing Nico O’Riley and Rayan Cherki, but City’s struggles continued as their winless league run extended to four matches in 2026.

The breakthrough finally came 25 minutes from time following a costly error from City. Cherki’s poorly taken free-kick allowed United to break at pace, and Fernandes released Mbeumo with a perfectly weighted pass for the winger to fire beyond Donnarumma.

United doubled their advantage when substitute Cunha delivered a pinpoint cross, which Dorgu converted at the back post after catching Rico Lewis napping.

Guardiola appeared to concede defeat late on, withdrawing Erling Haaland with 10 minutes remaining to preserve the striker for City’s ongoing battles across four competitions.

Diallo almost capped a superb individual display when he struck the post in the dying moments, while Mason Mount had a late effort ruled out by VAR for offside. By then, however, the damage had already been done.

For Carrick, returning to the Theatre of Dreams in the dugout, it was a statement victory — and a sweet start to life as Manchester United’s interim manager.
