The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA)
has launched an international investigation into a massive 1,000-kilogram
cocaine seizure, valued at over ?338 billion, recovered at the Tincan
Island Port.
According to an NDLEA statement on Tuesday, the drugs
were discovered over the weekend in an empty container at the PTML Terminal.
Terminal operators alerted the NDLEA and other port security agencies, which
jointly inspected the consignment. Tests later confirmed that the substance was
cocaine, a Class A drug.
Following the discovery, NDLEA Chairman Buba Marwa
directed that the Agency collaborate with its leading international partners to
unravel the cartel behind the shipment.
“The essence of collaborating with our international
partners on this case is to ensure no stone is left unturned… so that
ultimately we can get all the masterminds of this huge consignment brought to
book, wherever they are located across the globe,” Marwa said.
The United States Drug Enforcement Administration
(DEA) and the United Kingdom National Crime Agency (NCA) are now
actively involved in the probe, signaling a coordinated global effort to track
down those responsible for the smuggling operation.
