The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA)
has declared its full operational readiness to respond promptly to emergencies
during the Yuletide season and beyond.
The announcement came on Saturday as NEMA
Director General, Zubaida Umar, led personnel on a five-kilometre
fitness route walk in Abuja. The exercise aimed to promote physical
fitness, teamwork, and preparedness among staff, reinforcing the agency’s
mandate as a frontline emergency coordination body.
Speaking after the exercise, Umar expressed
satisfaction with the discipline, fitness level, and operational
preparedness of NEMA personnel. She highlighted that physical readiness
is critical to effective emergency response, particularly during periods of
increased human and vehicular activity.
“NEMA has activated its preparedness mechanisms
nationwide and is coordinating closely with security agencies, emergency
responders, and other critical stakeholders to ensure rapid response to any
situation during the festive period,” Umar said.
The DG urged the public to exercise caution and
safety awareness, advising motorists to obey traffic regulations, avoid
speeding, and remain vigilant in public spaces, waterways, and residential
areas. She reaffirmed that NEMA remains on standby across its zonal,
territorial, and state operations offices to facilitate timely responses to
emergencies.
Also speaking, Air Commodore Bature Usman, NEMA
Director of Search and Rescue, explained that the fitness exercise is a routine
initiative to maintain personnel’s physical and mental readiness for
emergency operations.
The exercise featured participation from key
stakeholders, including the Nigerian Armed Forces, Nigeria Police Force,
NSCDC, and FRSC, highlighting the importance of inter-agency
collaboration in effective disaster management.
As Nigerians prepare to celebrate, NEMA’s show of
readiness aims to ensure lives and property are protected throughout the
festive season.
