Sure, big movies like the new Madame Web might
hope to go on to bag an Oscar or two or maybe a couple of Golden Globes or a
BAFTA.
But often a lot of us film watchers will look to Rotten
Tomatoes for the lowdown on whether the latest flick is any good or
not.
Crime dramas like Kin sit
with a perfect rating, and so does Netflix’s recent documentary Lover,
Stalker, Killer.
But often, the audience score doesn’t always match the Tomato
meter and pretty brutally, sometimes films debut at a disappointingly low
average.
Sony’s latest instalment of its Spider-Man Universe
stars Dakota Johnson in the titular role, aka Cassandra Webb, a New York City
paramedic.
With a newfound ability to see into the future, she teams up
with three young women (played by Euphoria’s Sydney Sweeney,
Celeste O'Connor and Isabella Merced) in a fight against villain Ezekiel Sims
(Tahar Rahim).

Having only hit cinemas today (14 February) Madame Web currently
sits on the Tomato meter at a very sad 17 percent at the time of writing from
85 reviews.
Ouch.
Venom sits slightly higher at 30 percent from
the critics, but Madame Web did beat Morbius, which
is currently on just 15 percent.
Although, both of those do have over 70 percent from audiences
so there is still some hope for this latest Marvel flick.
As for the critics, some haven't been so forgiving, however.
A critic from The Guardian said: “There is something sickly
compelling about how disjointed and thoroughly incompetent Madame Web is, less
as so-bad-its-fun Midnight Movie and more studio film-making in the 2020s at
its very worst case study.”
As one from Dumdums brutally put: “Madame Web is
lifeless, with absolutely zero depth of character. It feels like a tax
write-off.”

San Francisco Chronicle wrote: “For much of Madame Web,
even when it turns bad, it’s a pleasure to see Johnson in this kind of movie.”
With Tribune News Service saying: “Is Madame Web a
good movie? No. Is it hilariously delightful? Often.”
And Mashable said: “Madame Web is burdened by too
many threads and not enough fun. Still, it could be worse. It could be Mobius.”
While a critic from Black Girl Nerds did say: “Go in with an
open mind and see for yourself how you feel about the film, just don’t let the
negative press sway your opinion.”
