President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF),
Ibrahim Musa Gusau, has appealed to Nigerians to maintain their support for the
Super Eagles as the team heads into Matchday 7 and 8 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup
African qualifiers.
Speaking ahead of the decisive fixtures, Gusau
expressed optimism about the team’s chances of progressing, despite their
current fourth-place standing in the group. Nigeria will host Rwanda in Uyo on
Saturday, September 6, before traveling to Johannesburg to face South Africa’s
Bafana Bafana on Tuesday, September 8.
“The Super Eagles remain determined and focused. They
know what is at stake, and we believe strongly that they will secure positive
results,” Gusau stated.
He assured that the Federation, in collaboration with
the National Sports Commission, has put in place all necessary technical and
logistical measures to strengthen the team’s qualification bid. According to
him, the goal is to ensure Nigeria secures a place at the 2026 World Cup, which
will be jointly hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico — the first
time the tournament will span three nations.
The Super Eagles will be looking to build momentum,
having previously beaten Rwanda 2-0 in Kigali and shared points with South
Africa in a 1-1 draw in Uyo. With only four matches remaining, every result
will prove crucial in the qualification race.
Gusau reaffirmed the Federation’s full backing for the
squad, while calling on fans across the country to unite behind the team in
these must-win encounters.
“We know the expectations of Nigerians are high. With
collective support and commitment, we believe the Super Eagles will deliver,”
he added.
The upcoming double-header in September is expected to
be decisive in shaping Nigeria’s path to the 2026 World Cup, with millions of
supporters eagerly awaiting the outcomes.
