The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) has unveiled a new Self-Service Enrollment Portal, allowing Nigerians to directly enroll in health insurance plans, update their details, and activate coverage online.

The platform was launched on Wednesday during the National Health Financing Policy Dialogue in Abuja, themed “Reimagining the Future of Health Financing in Nigeria.” NHIA said the initiative is part of its ongoing digital reforms to simplify access, reduce administrative bottlenecks, and accelerate the country’s push toward Universal Health Coverage (UHC).

Multiple Access Points for Users

The portal provides tailored options depending on users’ status:

  • New Enrollment – for Nigerians not yet covered under any NHIA plan.
  • NYSC Plan Activation – dedicated to National Youth Service Corps members seeking to activate their health insurance digitally.
  • Existing Enrollee Login – for registered users to update records, view coverage details, and track benefits.

Users can log in with an email address, phone number, or National Identification Number (NIN). A password reset option is also integrated to support easier access.

NHIA’s Statement on the Launch

Announcing the platform on its X handle, NHIA said:

“A New Era of Health Insurance in Nigeria – the NHIA Self-Service Portal is live. With this portal, you can now enroll, manage your details, and secure your health, all from the convenience of your phone or computer. This marks a major step forward in our mission to achieve Universal Health Coverage.”

Why It Matters

The NHIA Act 2022 makes health insurance mandatory for all Nigerians. By digitizing enrollment and verification, NHIA aims to cut reliance on physical offices, increase adoption among underserved and younger populations, and strengthen trust in the health insurance system.

Currently, more than 70% of healthcare expenses in Nigeria are paid out-of-pocket, leaving households vulnerable to financial shocks during medical emergencies. Stakeholders say the new portal is a critical innovation that could reduce hardship, improve enrollment rates, and make healthcare financing more sustainable.
