The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has forecast thunderstorms and moderate to heavy rainfall across most parts of the country between Thursday, September 4, and Saturday, September 6, 2025.

The prediction was contained in NiMet’s three-day weather outlook released on Wednesday in Abuja, as reported by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

Northern Region

According to NiMet, thunderstorms of varying intensity are expected across the north, with states such as Yobe, Kano, Jigawa, Bauchi, Adamawa, Taraba, Kebbi, Zamfara, Kaduna, Sokoto, Katsina, Gombe, and Borno likely to witness morning or evening rains within the period.

  • Thursday morning: thunderstorms with moderate rains are anticipated in Yobe, Kano, Jigawa, and Bauchi.
  • Afternoon/evening: heavier rains are likely in Adamawa, Taraba, Zamfara, Kebbi, Bauchi, Borno, Jigawa, and Yobe.

Central Region

The central states, including Plateau, Nasarawa, Kogi, Benue, Niger, Kwara, and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), are expected to experience cloudy skies in the mornings, followed by thunderstorms and moderate to heavy rains later in the day.

Southern Region

The outlook predicts cloudy mornings with light showers across Anambra, Abia, Ebonyi, Imo, Bayelsa, Delta, Cross River, Akwa Ibom, and Rivers States.
Rainfall is expected to intensify in the afternoon and evening, leading to moderate to heavy downpours that may trigger temporary flooding in low-lying areas and disrupt road traffic and outdoor activities.

Public Advisory

NiMet cautioned the public to take safety measures, noting that thunderstorms are often accompanied by strong winds which may precede rainfall in some areas.
It advised residents to:

  • Secure loose objects around homes and workplaces.
  • Avoid long journeys or driving during heavy rainfall.
  • Disconnect electrical appliances during storms to prevent damage.
  • Stay away from tall trees to reduce risks from falling branches.

The agency also advised airline operators to obtain airport-specific forecasts for effective flight planning and passenger safety.

NiMet urged Nigerians to stay updated through its official channels, stressing that regular monitoring of weather alerts is crucial for public safety and disaster prevention.
