The Niger State Police Command has confirmed a bandit
attack on St. Mary’s Private (Catholic) Secondary School in Papiri, Agwara
Local Government Area.
According to the command’s spokesperson, SP Wasiu
Abiodun, the armed bandits stormed the school around 2:00 a.m. and abducted an
unspecified number of students from the school’s hostel.
Abiodun said police tactical teams, the military, and
other security agencies have already been deployed to the area. He added that
operatives are currently combing the surrounding forests in an effort to rescue
the kidnapped students.
He further disclosed that the Commissioner of Police,
CP Adamu Abdullahi Elleman, has vowed to ensure the safe rescue of the victims,
urging residents to remain calm and provide useful information that could aid
the operation.
The police spokesperson also noted that the incident
will be thoroughly investigated, adding that necessary action would be taken
against the school’s management for continuing academic activities despite a
state government directive ordering schools in the area to shut down due to
heightened security threats.
