Niger State Governor Umaru Bago has ordered the immediate closure of all private and public schools in the state following the abduction of students and staff from St. Mary’s Private (Catholic) Secondary School in Papiri, Agwara LGA. Speaking after an emergency meeting with service chiefs and stakeholders, Governor Bago described the incident as “unfortunate and deeply saddening” and assured residents of the government’s commitment to the safe return of the abductees.

The closure affects all schools, including missionary and Islamic institutions, and Federal Government College Minna along with other unity schools have also been shut. Security agencies have been directed to conduct a headcount to confirm the number of abducted students. Governor Bago called on civil society, religious leaders, and security agencies to intensify rescue efforts and visited the Papiri community to show solidarity with affected residents.

The move comes amid a series of mass abductions in northern Nigeria, with increasing calls for urgent and coordinated government action to address insecurity in schools.
