Team Nigeria's men's 4x100m relay team has been
downgraded from silver to bronze at the 2026 Commonwealth Games after Canada
successfully appealed its earlier disqualification.
The Nigerian quartet of Favour Ashe, Kayinsola Ajayi,
Nicholas Fakorede, and Udodi Onwuzurike originally crossed the finish line in
third place but were elevated to second after Canada, which finished ahead of
them, was disqualified over an alleged lane infringement.
Canada had posted a time of 38.11 seconds, finishing
behind only Australia, which claimed the gold medal. The Canadian athletes had
begun celebrating their silver medal before officials announced their
disqualification, prompting an immediate appeal.
The medal presentation was delayed while the appeal
was reviewed. A few hours later, the appeal was upheld, leading Commonwealth
Games organisers to reinstate Canada's silver medal and revise the official
results. As a result, Nigeria's relay team was moved back to the bronze medal
position.
Despite the adjustment, Team Nigeria has continued its
impressive performance at the 2026 Commonwealth Games, with a total haul of 23
medals comprising 10 gold, six silver, and seven bronze medals.
