Nigerian Army Mourns Officer Killed in Domestic Fire Incident

The 2 Brigade of the Nigerian Army, Ibagwa, Akwa Ibom State, has expressed deep sorrow over the death of Lieutenant Samson Haruna, the Regimental Medical Officer of the 6 Battalion, who died from severe burns sustained during a domestic dispute with his wife, Mrs. Retyit Obadiah Dalong Samson Haruna.

According to reports, the tragic incident occurred on September 22, 2025, at the couple’s residence in Wellington Bassey Barracks, Ibagwa.

In a statement signed by Captain Lawal Bala Muhammad, Assistant Director of Army Public Relations, 2 Brigade Headquarters, Uyo, the Army said preliminary investigations revealed that the incident followed a heated argument between the couple over a family issue.

“Preliminary investigation revealed that the tragic incident occurred after a heated argument between the couple, reportedly stemming from a family crisis, which escalated when Mrs. Haruna allegedly set ablaze properties in the house and the officer was caught by the inferno,” the statement read.

Lieutenant Haruna was initially stabilized at the Battalion Medical Facility before being transferred to the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital, where he sadly passed away on Tuesday, October 7, 2025.

The Nigerian Army condemned the act, describing it as a grave case of domestic violence, while emphasizing the importance of peaceful coexistence within families.

“The Nigerian Army strongly condemns this act of domestic violence, recognizing the imperative of peaceful coexistence and respect within families. We extend our heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family of Lieutenant Haruna,” the statement continued.

The Army reaffirmed its commitment to addressing domestic violence and supporting family welfare among its personnel through awareness campaigns, counselling, and open dialogue.

“The Nigerian Army will continue to advocate for healthy relationships, addressing domestic violence, and fostering a culture of respect and dialogue within families and communities. We call on all parties to remain calm while awaiting the outcome of the military police investigation,” it added.

The incident has sent shockwaves through the military community, reigniting discussions about domestic safety and the emotional strain of military service on family life.
