A Nigerian businessman popularly known as Big Joe has
reportedly been shot dead by unidentified gunmen in South Africa.
The fatal attack occurred on Sunday, June 28, outside
his business premises in Witbank, Emalahleni, located in Mpumalanga Province.
According to reports, the assailants opened fire on
the businessman several times before fleeing the scene, leaving him with fatal
injuries.
Authorities have yet to officially confirm the
identity of the victim or disclose the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
The South African Police Service has also not announced any arrests or
established a motive for the attack.
Investigations are currently ongoing as security
agencies work to identify those responsible and determine the reason behind the
killing.
The incident comes at a time of growing concern over
anti-immigrant sentiments in parts of South Africa, where some groups have
recently intensified calls for undocumented foreign nationals to leave the
country.
The killing has further heightened fears among foreign
nationals, particularly members of the Nigerian community, many of whom have
expressed concern over the safety of Nigerians living and operating businesses
in South Africa.
Members of the Nigerian diaspora have called on South
African authorities to conduct a thorough investigation, bring those
responsible to justice and ensure the protection of foreign nationals residing
in the country.
