Dutse, Jigawa State – The Poultry Farmers Association
of Nigeria (PFAN) has raised concerns over the declining affordability of eggs
among Nigerians, blaming the situation on worsening economic conditions.
Speaking during a courtesy visit to Governor Umar
Namadi at the Government House in Dutse on Thursday, the Chairman of PFAN’s
Jigawa State chapter, Hussaini Gumel, lamented that the poultry industry is on
the verge of collapse.
“Since the removal of fuel subsidy, our industry has
been hit hard. Many Nigerians can no longer afford eggs, and our sales have
plummeted,” Gumel said.
He stressed that the economic hardship in the country
has led to a significant drop in consumer purchasing power, which in turn has
crippled demand for poultry products.
“We’re struggling to keep our businesses afloat,” he
said. “There’s no market for our products, and the lack of sufficient money in
circulation among people is alarming.”
Gumel warned that unless urgent intervention is
provided, many poultry farms could shut down completely, worsening unemployment
and food insecurity.
Currently, a crate of eggs is sold between ?5,700 and
?6,000 in Nigerian markets, depending on the location — a steep rise that has
pushed the product out of reach for many average-income earners.
