Several Nigerians were among dozens of people injured
after Iran launched a fresh wave of missile and drone attacks on the United
Arab Emirates, an assault that left at least six people dead.
The UAE Ministry of Defence said its air defence
systems intercepted several ballistic missiles and unmanned aerial vehicles
launched from Iran in what officials described as a major escalation in the
ongoing Middle East conflict.
In a statement released on Saturday, March 14, 2026,
the ministry revealed that defence units successfully engaged nine ballistic
missiles and 33 drones fired during the latest attack.
According to authorities, the strikes resulted in six
fatalities and left 141 people injured, including foreign nationals residing
and working in the Gulf nation.
“The UAE air defence systems on March 14 engaged nine
ballistic missiles and 33 UAVs launched from Iran,” the ministry said.
The ministry also disclosed that since the beginning
of the conflict, UAE air defences have intercepted a total of 294 ballistic
missiles, 15 cruise missiles and about 1,600 drones launched from Iran.
Officials confirmed that those killed included
citizens of the UAE as well as foreign nationals from Pakistan, Nepal and
Bangladesh.
Although the exact locations of the casualties were
not disclosed, authorities said the injured included residents from several
countries, among them Nigeria.
Other affected nationalities include Egypt, Sudan,
Ethiopia, the Philippines, Pakistan, Iran, India, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka,
alongside Azerbaijan, Yemen, Uganda, Eritrea, Lebanon, Afghanistan, Bahrain,
Comoros, Türkiye, Iraq, Nepal, Oman, Jordan, Palestine, Ghana, Indonesia and
Sweden.
Despite condemnation from neighbouring countries, Iran
has reportedly continued launching missile and drone attacks across parts of
the Gulf region.
The strikes are believed to be retaliation for recent
military operations carried out by the United States and Israel against Iranian
targets.
Reports indicate that Iran targeted several Gulf
countries, including Saudi Arabia, Qatar and the UAE, late Friday and into
Saturday, with some of the attacks causing infrastructural damage.
Meanwhile, Nigerians currently stranded across several
Gulf countries have appealed to the Federal Government to prepare emergency
repatriation flights in case the security situation worsens.
