The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC)
has released new security guidelines for Nigerians using its self-service
portal to update or modify their National Identification Number (NIN)
records.
The announcement, made via a statement signed by Dr.
Kayode Adegoke, Head of the Commission’s Corporate Communications Unit,
outlines strict access protocols intended to enhance user data
protection and prevent unauthorized logins.
Portal Access Now Tied to Device and
Browser Used at Registration
According to NIMC, once a user registers on the
portal, access to their self-service account is locked to the specific
browser and device used during the registration process.
“Your self-service account is uniquely tied to the
browser and device used during registration. Access to your account is
therefore limited to that specific browser on that particular device,” the
Commission explained.
This security measure is aimed at curbing data
breaches and safeguarding the integrity of user identities on the platform.
Cache Clearing May Result in Account
Lockout
NIMC also warned against clearing browser cache, as
doing so can reset stored access configurations and trigger a lockout
from the system. Once locked, users will be limited to five unlock attempts
before their accounts are completely blocked from access.
“These are some of the measures put in place by the
Commission to safeguard and protect the identity of users,” the statement
noted.
To regain access after multiple failed attempts, users
will need to initiate a formal unlinking process with the Commission.
Strict Adherence to Guidelines Urged
The Commission strongly advised all applicants to adhere
strictly to these access rules to avoid unnecessary service disruptions and
delays in modifying their data.
“Your cooperation is greatly appreciated as the
Commission continues to safeguard your data and improve service delivery,” NIMC
stated.
Why This Matters
This update comes as part of NIMC’s broader digital
transformation efforts to streamline identity management and make services more
efficient and accessible.
In October 2024, NIMC phased out manual
modification services at its enrolment centres nationwide, shifting all data
updates exclusively to the self-service modification portal.
“Modification activities will no longer be conducted
in our enrollment centers. Instead, we have launched a convenient self-service
modification portal, empowering you to update your information securely and
efficiently online,” the Commission previously announced.
Portal Benefits and Challenges
The self-service portal has been praised for its convenience,
enabling users to modify their data anytime, anywhere without visiting
NIMC offices.
However, the new security measures may pose challenges
for users who switch devices frequently or are unfamiliar with cache and
browser settings. NIMC says it is working to strike the right balance between security
and usability.
Bottom Line
Nigerians seeking to make changes to their NIN
records—such as name corrections, date of birth changes, or other personal
details—are advised to carefully follow the latest access instructions to avoid
complications.
For additional assistance, users are encouraged to
consult the official NIMC website or contact the Commission through its
approved support channels.
