NiMet Forecasts Thunderstorms, Heavy Rainfall Across Nigeria This Weekend

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has forecast thunderstorms and moderate to heavy rainfall across several parts of the country from Friday through Sunday, with possible flooding in some areas.

In its three-day weather outlook released in Abuja on Thursday, the agency warned residents to take safety precautions, especially in flood-prone areas.

Northern Region:
NiMet predicts isolated thunderstorms with moderate rains across Bauchi, Gombe, Adamawa, Taraba, Kaduna, Kano, Zamfara, Katsina, Sokoto, and Kebbi States on Friday morning. By Saturday, cloudy skies with intervals of sunshine are expected, followed by isolated thunderstorms in Taraba, Adamawa, southern Borno, Bauchi, Sokoto, Kebbi, Kaduna, Zamfara, Kano, and Katsina. On Sunday, cloudy conditions with light rains are expected in Yobe, Jigawa, Kano, and Katsina.

Central Region:
The central states will also experience rainfall during the period. Light rains are expected in Niger, Kogi, and Benue States on Friday morning, with thunderstorms and moderate rains in Nasarawa, Plateau, Kwara, Kogi, Benue, and the Federal Capital Territory later in the day. Saturday will bring more widespread thunderstorms, while Sunday will see cloudy skies with chances of thunderstorms over the FCT, Plateau, Nasarawa, and Benue.

Southern Region:
The southern states will see consistent rainfall throughout the forecast period. NiMet projects intermittent moderate rains over most parts of the region, with a risk of flooding in Lagos, Ogun, Akwa Ibom, and Cross River States. By Saturday, rains are expected across Lagos, Ogun, Edo, Ebonyi, Imo, Abia, Rivers, Bayelsa, Delta, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom, intensifying later in the day. On Sunday, moderate rainfall will persist across Oyo, Ogun, Lagos, Edo, Delta, Rivers, Bayelsa, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom.

Safety Warnings:
NiMet cautioned against driving during heavy rainfall and advised farmers not to apply fertilizers or pesticides immediately before rains to avoid nutrient leaching. The agency also urged residents to secure loose objects, disconnect electrical appliances, and stay away from tall trees during thunderstorms.

Airline operators were advised to obtain airport-specific forecasts from NiMet for effective flight planning.

NiMet encouraged Nigerians to remain updated on daily weather forecasts, available at www.nimet.gov.ng.
