The National Publicity Secretary of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Ladipo Johnson, has confirmed that the party will remain active in the 2027 general elections despite the departure of its 2023 presidential candidate, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.

Speaking on The Morning Brief on Channels Television, Johnson revealed that the NNPP plans to collaborate with the African Democratic Congress (ADC) for the presidential contest, while still fielding candidates in other positions.

He explained that although the party may align with the ADC at the top level, it intends to maintain its presence across various elective offices nationwide.

Johnson noted that Kwankwaso’s decision to leave the NNPP followed extensive consultations among opposition leaders, who are now working towards forming a united front ahead of the 2027 elections.

According to him, the former Kano State governor is expected to formally register as a member of the ADC in Kano, marking a new phase in his political journey.

He dismissed concerns that Kwankwaso’s exit could weaken the NNPP, insisting that the broader goal of opposition figures is to create a strong alternative platform capable of challenging the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Kwankwaso’s move comes after weeks of strategic meetings with key political stakeholders, including Rauf Aregbesola, Peter Obi, Seyi Makinde, and Seriake Dickson, as part of efforts to build a broad opposition coalition.

The development is unfolding amid a growing political rift between Kwankwaso and Abba Yusuf, the Governor of Kano State. Yusuf recently defected to the APC alongside several lawmakers, a move Kwankwaso has openly criticised, describing it as a betrayal.

Political analysts view the ongoing realignments as part of a larger strategy by opposition groups to strengthen their chances of unseating the APC in the 2027 general elections.
