An official of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC)
in Ogun State, Abass Olalekan, has been arrested in connection with the death
of a female corps member, Victoria Ariyo.
Ariyo, who was serving in Abeokuta South Local
Government Area, reportedly died last Tuesday after complications arising from
a pregnancy termination. She was subsequently buried at Kobape Cemetery along
Kobape-Sagamu Road in Abeokuta.
Reports indicate that her death occurred barely a
month after another corps member, Adeleye Mary, died under unclear
circumstances. Mary had been serving in the same local government area and was
posted to Ogun State Television as her place of primary assignment. Sources
suggest that both deceased corps members were close friends.
According to a police source, Olalekan, who serves as
the Local Government Inspector (LGI) for Abeokuta South, is alleged to have
been involved in a relationship with Ariyo, which reportedly led to the
pregnancy and subsequent termination that preceded her death.
The source confirmed that the suspect is currently in
custody at the police headquarters in Eleweran, Abeokuta, adding that the
situation raises concerns about professional conduct and responsibility.
However, authorities clarified that there is no
established link between Ariyo’s death and the earlier incident involving Mary.
Confirming the case, spokesperson of the Ogun State
Police Command, Oluseyi Babaseyi, stated that investigations into the death are
ongoing at the State Criminal Investigation Department.
He did not provide further details regarding the
arrest or the alleged involvement of the NYSC official.
