Nigeria’s Minister of Youth Development, Jamila Bio Ibrahim, has called on the management of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) to review and possibly stop the early morning military-style drills for corps members during their orientation camp exercise.

This call comes after growing concerns from parents, guardians, and stakeholders over the strenuous physical activities that corps members are subjected to during the three-week orientation camp.

Minister Expresses Concern

Speaking at a recent youth engagement event, the minister said that while physical fitness is important, the health and safety of young Nigerians should be paramount.

“We must prioritize the health of our corps members. The early morning drills, especially those done in harsh weather conditions, should be reconsidered. The NYSC should find alternative ways to engage and build discipline without endangering their well-being,” she said.

Growing Criticism of Camp Drills

The NYSC orientation camp is known for its regimented routine which includes early morning parades, long drills, and physical fitness exercises starting as early as 4:30 am.

Many corpers have in the past complained about the stress and health risks posed by these activities, particularly for those with medical conditions.

Some have even taken to social media to recount scary experiences during the drills, calling for reforms in camp routines.

NYSC Reacts

In response, the NYSC management said it is open to discussions on improving camp activities but maintained that morning drills are part of instilling discipline, fitness, and teamwork among corps members.

However, with increasing concerns, there are indications that the management may begin reviewing these routines, especially for those medically unfit.

Health Experts Weigh In

Medical experts have also supported the Minister’s view, noting that intense physical activities without proper medical screening could lead to health emergencies.

They advised that any physical exercise should be done with adequate caution, proper medical supervision, and flexibility for those unable to participate fully.

What’s Next?

It remains to be seen if the NYSC will officially suspend or modify the early morning drills. The call by the Youth Minister has reignited the conversation around reforms within the NYSC scheme, with many young Nigerians hoping for a more health-conscious and friendly orientation camp experience.
