Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has strongly condemned the killing of a young man by unidentified gunmen at the main gate of University of Benin on Sunday, declaring that Edo State will not become a safe haven for criminals.

In a statement issued through his Chief Press Secretary, Dr. Patrick Ebojele, the governor described the daylight attack as a shocking and unacceptable act of violence.

According to the statement, the governor said the “brazen and cold-blooded killing” on a day considered sacred by many was not only an assault on human dignity but also a serious threat to public safety and the values of his administration.

Governor Okpebholo extended condolences to the family, friends, and associates of the deceased, assuring them that justice would be pursued without compromise.

He disclosed that the Edo State Police Command has already launched an investigation into the incident, while security agencies have intensified efforts to identify and arrest those responsible for the attack.

The governor emphasized that the case would not be ignored or covered up, promising that all perpetrators involved in the crime would face the full weight of the law.

Reaffirming his administration’s commitment to tackling cultism and violent crimes across Edo State, Okpebholo highlighted several measures already introduced since assuming office. These include intensified security operations in areas known for cult-related activities, increased collaboration with the Nigeria Police Force, the Department of State Services, and the Nigerian Army to dismantle criminal networks operating within the state.

He also pointed to community-based initiatives involving traditional rulers, religious leaders, youth groups, and civil society organisations aimed at preventing cult violence and promoting peace.

In addition, the governor stressed the importance of rehabilitation and reintegration programmes for vulnerable youths, noting that long-term security requires both enforcement and preventive strategies.

While acknowledging that progress has been made in the fight against cultism, Okpebholo stated that the recent killing serves as a reminder that more work still needs to be done to restore safety and stability across the state.

He urged residents with useful information about the incident to report to the police or any security agency, assuring the public that all information provided would be treated confidentially.
