Lere Olayinka, the Senior Special Assistant on Public
Communications and New Media to the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister,
Nyesom Wike, has refuted claims that his boss is engaging in anti-party
activities. Some members of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP)…
had accused Wike of exacerbating the party’s internal
crisis after his appointment by President Bola Tinubu.
Olayinka dismissed these allegations, stressing that
Wike is serving Nigeria, not the All Progressives Congress (APC). He explained
that, unlike in a parliamentary system, the President has the right to appoint
ministers from across political parties in a presidential system, and Wike had
notified PDP of his appointment before accepting it.
He emphasized that Wike’s service in the cabinet is
not indicative of working for the ruling APC, drawing comparisons with other
political figures, such as Daniel Bwala, a former aide to PDP presidential
candidate Atiku Abubakar, who was appointed by Tinubu despite his past
criticisms.
Olayinka concluded by stating that, for now, the focus
is on governance, not politics, as the PDP currently has no candidate for the
2027 elections.
