TikTok is gradually introducing a new feature that
allows users to respond to videos with voice comments instead of relying solely
on text.
The feature enables users to record short audio
messages directly within the comments section. For users who have access, a
microphone icon appears alongside the existing comment options, allowing them
to record and post a voice message.
However, the feature is not currently available to
TikTok users in Nigeria. The rollout is being conducted in phases, meaning
availability may vary between users and regions even when they are running the
same version of the app.
Once a voice comment is posted, it appears in the
comments section as an audio waveform that other users can tap to listen to.
TikTok has also incorporated an automatic
transcription feature. After a voice comment is submitted, the platform
processes the recording and displays a written transcription below the audio.
This could be particularly useful for people browsing TikTok without sound.
The platform has yet to disclose which languages will
be supported by the transcription system or whether users will eventually be
able to edit or hide automatically generated transcriptions.
TikTok has reportedly been testing voice comments
since earlier this year, with access gradually being extended to selected
users.
Creators will also have some control over the feature,
including the ability to determine whether users can post voice comments on
their videos. They can also remove or report comments they consider
inappropriate.
The introduction of voice comments expands TikTok’s
use of audio-based interaction. The platform previously introduced voice
messages in direct messages, and the latest feature brings similar
functionality into public comment sections.
For now, Nigerian users will have to continue using
TikTok’s existing text and emoji comment options until the voice-comment
feature is made available in the country.
