OpenAI has announced the rollout of a new generation
of apps integrated directly into ChatGPT, allowing users to interact seamlessly
with third-party services through natural conversation.
The update, revealed in a blog post on Monday,
represents a major expansion of ChatGPT’s functionality and developer
ecosystem.
“Today we’re introducing a new generation of apps you
can chat with, right inside ChatGPT. Developers can start building them today
with the new Apps SDK, available in preview,” the company stated.
How the New Apps Work
According to OpenAI, these apps are designed to fit
naturally into conversations and can either be suggested by ChatGPT or invoked
directly by name.
“Apps respond to natural language and include
interactive interfaces you can use right in the chat,” the company explained.
“For ChatGPT users, apps meet you in the chat and adapt to your context to help
you create, learn, and do more.”
For developers, OpenAI said the new Apps SDK
“makes it possible to reach over 800 million ChatGPT users at just the right
time,” describing it as an open standard built on the Model Context Protocol
(MCP).
Availability and Pilot Partners
OpenAI confirmed that the in-chat apps are now
available to all logged-in ChatGPT users—outside the European Union—on the Free,
Go, Plus, and Pro plans.
“Our pilot partners—Booking.com, Canva, Coursera,
Figma, Expedia, Spotify, and Zillow—are also available today in markets where
their services are offered, starting in English,” OpenAI said.
The company added that additional pilot partners will
be introduced later this year and that EU users will gain access in subsequent
updates.
Developer Access and Monetization
Developers can now create and test their apps using
the Apps SDK preview. OpenAI noted that it will begin accepting app submissions
for review and publication later this year, alongside details on how developers
can monetize their creations.
Using Apps Inside ChatGPT
Explaining the functionality, OpenAI said users can
simply type commands involving an app to trigger its use.
“When you start a message to ChatGPT with the name of
an available app, like ‘Spotify, make a playlist for my party this Friday,’
ChatGPT can automatically surface the app in your chat and use relevant context
to help,” the company explained.
The first time a user interacts with an app, ChatGPT
will prompt them to connect and review data-sharing details.
As an example, OpenAI said that when a user discusses
buying a new home, ChatGPT might automatically suggest the Zillow app,
allowing them to browse property listings on an interactive map within the
chat.
A New Era of Interactive AI
OpenAI described the release as the start of a new,
interactive experience that merges traditional app functionality with
conversational AI.
“The magic of this new generation of apps in ChatGPT
is how they blend familiar interactive elements—like maps, playlists, and
presentations—with new ways of interacting through conversation,” the company
said.
Users can now, for example, start a project outline
and ask Canva to turn it into a presentation or take a course on Coursera
while asking ChatGPT to elaborate on lessons in real-time.
OpenAI concluded by noting that as more developers
build with the Apps SDK, “the list of what’s possible will keep growing—because
these apps appear naturally in your chats, you’ll find them when they’re most
likely to be useful.”
