Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen made history on
Wednesday night as he scored his first-ever UEFA Champions League hat-trick,
leading Galatasaray to a commanding 3-0 victory over Dutch side Ajax
at the Johan Cruijff Arena in Amsterdam.
After a goalless first half, the Super Eagles
forward broke the deadlock in the 59th minute with a towering header. He
then doubled Galatasaray’s advantage from the penalty spot in the 66th
minute, before completing his hat-trick with another well-taken
penalty 12 minutes later.
The win marked Galatasaray’s third consecutive
victory in the Champions League group stage, keeping their knockout stage
hopes alive.
Osimhen’s treble continues his electric form in Europe
— the 26-year-old has now scored 12 goals in his last eight
appearances for the Turkish champions in continental competitions.
Just two weeks earlier, the Nigerian star bagged a brace
in Galatasaray’s 3-1 win over Bodo/Glimt, following his decisive strike
in their famous 2-1 victory over Liverpool on matchday three.
With his hat-trick, Osimhen also became the first
Galatasaray player ever to score a brace in back-to-back Champions League
matches, a testament to his blistering form and growing legend in Istanbul.
The victory cements Galatasaray’s position as one of
the dark horses of this season’s Champions League, with Osimhen at the
forefront of their European charge.
