The Oyo State Universal Basic Education Board, OYOSUBEB, has confirmed the killing of a teacher and the abduction of some pupils, students, and staff following an attack on schools in Ahoro-Esinele community, Oriire Local Government Area of the state.

The attack occurred on Friday morning, May 15, 2026, and has thrown the education community in Oyo State into mourning.

In a statement, the Executive Chairman of OYOSUBEB, Dr. Nureni Aderemi Adeniran, described the incident as tragic and deeply painful. He said the exact number of abducted pupils had not yet been confirmed, as security agencies were still combing the affected areas and gathering details.

According to him, the attack affected LA School, Ahoro-Esinele, and Community Grammar School, Ahoro-Esinele, under Oriire LGUBEA.

“This is a dark and painful moment for our education family in Oyo State, and our hearts are with the affected parents, teachers, and the entire community,” the statement read.

Adeniran assured parents and residents that security operatives were working to rescue the abducted victims and restore calm to the affected community.

He said a tactical response team had been deployed under the coordination of the Commissioner of Police, while intelligence and operational efforts were ongoing.

The OYOSUBEB chairman also announced the immediate closure of primary schools in neighbouring local government areas, including Surulere, Oyo East, Oriire, and Olorunsogo, until further notice.

He explained that the temporary closure was necessary to prevent further attacks and allow security agencies to stabilise the area.

“We appeal to parents, guardians, and community leaders to remain calm and prayerful. We understand your pain. We understand your fears. But we want to reassure you, your children will not be abandoned, and this government will not rest until every child is safely returned,” he said.

Adeniran urged members of the public to avoid spreading unverified information that could worsen panic, while calling for vigilance and cooperation with security agencies.

The board also mourned the teacher who lost his life in the attack, saying his service and sacrifice would not be forgotten.

The Oyo State Police Command also confirmed the incident, stating that a manhunt and rescue operation had been launched.

Police spokesperson, DSP Ayanlade Olayinka, said preliminary findings showed that the attackers arrived on motorcycles and launched a coordinated attack on Baptist Nursery and Primary School, Yawota, as well as Community Grammar School/L.A Primary School, Esiele.

According to the police, the abducted victims include pupils, students, staff members, and the Vice Principal, identified as Mrs. Alamu Folawe.

Olayinka said no pupil or student had been confirmed killed at the time of the report. However, an assistant headmaster identified as Mr. Adesiyan was killed during the attack.

He also disclosed that a commercial motorcycle rider was shot dead after allegedly resisting attempts by the attackers to seize his motorcycle.

The police added that the attackers took away a Toyota Corolla belonging to the abducted vice principal and later set the vehicle ablaze on the road leading to the forest.

Following the attack, the Commissioner of Police in Oyo State, CP Abimbola Ayodeji Olugbenga, led operatives and other security commanders to the scene for assessment and operational coordination.

The command said tactical teams, intelligence units, and operational assets had been deployed to the affected communities to prevent further breakdown of law and order, rescue the abducted victims, and apprehend those behind the attack.
