Cole Palmer has signed an improved contract at Chelsea
that runs until 2034, a year longer than his previous deal, which was due to
expire in 2033.
The 24-year-old said the club's direction and the
assurances he received from the owners, sporting directors and manager made the
decision easy. "Chelsea means a lot to me," he said, adding that his
teammates share the same ambitions and that he wants to play a big part in the
club winning major trophies consistently.
Palmer moved to Stamford Bridge from Manchester City
in 2023 and has contributed 91 goals and assists in 138 appearances. A
persistent groin problem hampered his last season, and he was controversially
left out of England's World Cup squad by Thomas Tuchel. Tuchel has since said
Palmer "missed too many opportunities" to play for England after he
withdrew from the squad for the recent Nations League games.
Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso defended his player on
Friday, insisting Palmer is committed to England and only needs to be fully fit
to show his best for club and country.
Palmer has started the new season well, with four
goals in seven appearances across all competitions. His close friendship with
Morgan Rogers reportedly played a part in the England midfielder's move from
Aston Villa to Chelsea in the summer.
The deal is the latest long-term contract handed to a
Chelsea player, following recent agreements with Joao Pedro and Pedro Neto that
also stretch into the 2030s.
