A faction of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has
dismissed allegations that party officials obstructed aspirants from purchasing
nomination forms for the presidential ticket.
In a statement released on Thursday, the faction’s
spokesman, Ini Ememobong, described the claims as misleading and unfounded. He
said the party had not directed any officials to stop interested contenders
from participating in the process.
Ememobong added that the Interim National Working
Committee is not aware of any action taken by party officials to hinder
would-be aspirants from buying the forms.
He explained that the PDP reviewed and extended its
timetable after appeals from members who requested more time to complete the
process. Under the revised schedule, the deadline for purchasing and submitting
completed nomination forms is Friday, May 22, 2026. A special screening
exercise for aspirants who are yet to be screened is scheduled for Saturday,
May 23, 2026.
The faction also clarified that even though the PDP
zoned its presidential ticket to the South, the party cannot constitutionally
bar any Nigerian from contesting for elective office.
The faction urged the public to disregard reports
suggesting aspirants were being denied access to nomination forms, insisting
that the forms remain available within the timeframe stated in the amended
timetable and that all Nigerians interested in contesting on the PDP platform
can obtain, complete, and return the forms.
