The Bayelsa State Police Command has arrested two suspected cultists, including a 300-level student of Niger Delta University (NDU), following a cult-related incident that claimed the life of a student in Amassoma, Southern Ijaw Local Government Area.

The command's spokesperson, DSP Musa Mohammed, disclosed the arrests in a statement issued on Thursday, July 9, 2026, stating that the suspects were apprehended while allegedly mobilising for a retaliatory attack after the killing of a fellow suspected cult member.

The deceased, identified as Ebube Jonathan, a 200-level Management Science student at Niger Delta University, was reportedly attacked along Kabaka Street in Amassoma at about 2 p.m. on Tuesday.

According to the police, Jonathan, who was suspected to be a member of the Black Axe confraternity, was hacked with machetes and shot by unidentified assailants. He was later confirmed dead by a medical doctor.

Following the incident, operatives attached to the Amassoma Division launched a swift operation and arrested two suspects later the same day.

The suspects were identified as 24-year-old Godswin Adobu, a 300-level Fine and Applied Arts student in the Faculty of Environmental Sciences at Niger Delta University, and 21-year-old Tarilaefa Fesingha.

Police said the pair were arrested at Ending Pele, Amassoma, while allegedly preparing to avenge the killing of the deceased.

During the operation, officers also recovered two locally made pistols and two rounds of live 9mm ammunition.

The Commissioner of Police reaffirmed the Command's commitment to tackling cultism and other violent crimes across Bayelsa State, warning criminal groups to abandon unlawful activities or face decisive legal action.

He also urged residents to continue supporting law enforcement agencies by providing timely and credible information to aid ongoing efforts to combat crime in the state.
