The Nigeria Police Force has taken into custody one of
its officers accused of extorting money from a driver in the Idimu area of
Lagos State.
The incident came to light after a Nigerian man,
Olumide J, shared a viral video recounting his experience. According to him,
the officer stopped his vehicle and requested his documents. After reviewing
them, the officer reportedly claimed there was an inconsistency in the car’s
color—arguing that the vehicle appeared “grey” instead of “ash” as stated in
the registration papers.
The officer allegedly insisted that the discrepancy
constituted an offense and directed the driver to accompany him to the station.
However, Olumide claimed the situation escalated when the officer demanded a
?30,000 bribe, which was eventually reduced to N10,000 after negotiation.
Reacting to the incident, the Police Complaint Unit
confirmed via its official X (formerly Twitter) account on Wednesday that the
officer had been identified, arrested, and placed under detention. The unit
also stated that the officer has been issued a query and is currently
undergoing internal disciplinary procedures.
