The trial of individuals accused of plotting a coup
against President Bola Ahmed Tinubu commenced on Wednesday, April 22, at the
Federal High Court in Abuja.
The case is being presided over by Justice Joyce
Abdulmalik, while the prosecution is led by the Attorney General of the
Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi.
During proceedings, all defendants were present in
court except former Minister of State for Petroleum, Timipre Sylva, who was
reported to be at large.
However, the arraignment was temporarily halted after
the court identified the need for an interpreter for one of the defendants,
Sheikh Abdulkadir Sanni, whose counsel informed the court that he understands
only Hausa and Arabic.
The Federal Government had earlier filed a 13-count
charge against the accused, alleging a plan to overthrow the current
administration. The case involves 16 suspects, including military personnel
such as a retired major general, a retired naval captain, a serving police
inspector, among others.
The suspects were initially arrested on October 31,
2025, over allegations of orchestrating a plot to unseat the government.
Proceedings are expected to continue once arrangements for interpretation are
completed.
